Rodrigues is a small isolated island 560 kilometers East of Mauritius. We visited the place from November the 15th to the 20th of 2014.

At this time of the year, the only way to reach Rodrigues was to take a propeller plane from Mauritius. A sea way also exists, but it is mainly dedicated to freight transportation.
Rodrigues is a 109 km2 area, with a shallow lagoon, which is a bit bigger than 200 km2
This airport is definitely the cutest and the prettiest we’ve ever seen! Minimalist and human sized, yet perfectly functional !

As soon as we arrived, we enjoyed a presentation of the local songs and dances, inspired by the Maurician Séga, but with musette and poems.
Even if the church is being renovated, it is as full as the French churches are empty these days!
Even if the church doesn’t look like much, it is in fact the biggest in the whole Indian Ocean, since it can welcome more than 2500 people. When it was built between 1936 and 1939, the worshippers greatly contributed to the manufacturing. Everyone, while they attended to the mass, brang wood, sand and bricks.
A special photographic flexibility is required to get the whole picture of this beast!
We then spent the rest of the day working like slaves for the TATUP website, enjoying the Wi-Fi in the lounge of the hotel, before leaving for the bed & breakfast La Belle Rodriguaise.
On the way between the Anse Mourouk and Graviers, the landscape is much contrasted, this is simply beautiful

Good thing our vehicle has a good ground clearance, because the last few kilometers were in a total wilderness
We are delighted to arrive to this simple natural landscape
And we discover the BnB La Belle Rodriguaise
The next day we need to go to the capital city : Port Mathurin in order to settle the paperwork for the rent of the vehicle
It is a small town, arranged as a grid with three main roads, an artisanal market, and a bus station with its own petrol supply
We were told (a lot!) in Mauritius that three days were more than enough to visit Rodrigues, and that after this date the trip became boring.
But what’s coming next will prove you that five days weren’t enough!
